December 2006 Events

Present to 12/07/06 Art Exhibit La Vida Nunca Muere (Life Never Dies)

Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, La Vida Nunca Muere recreates the traditional Altar for the Departed Souls as an installation of natural and electronic elements. The artist behind the exhibit- Antonia Guerrero- has had her works prominently displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and the Munich Museum in Germany.

La Vida Nunca Muere is being shown at the MediaNoche Gallery, 161 East 106th Street, First Floor, Manhattan.

12/06/07 Lecture: How to Make Enemies Doing a Non Fiction Magazine: The Case of How Inca Kola beat Coke

Julio Villanueva-Chang- the founder and editor-in-chief of Peruvian nonfiction magazine Etiqueta Negra- will discuss this article from 2005 on the David vs. Goliath battle surrounding Coca-Cola’s expansion into the Peruvian market.

The lecture will take place in room 324 of NYU’S King Juan Carlos Center at 4pm and the lecture will be in Spanish.

12/07/06 to 12/10/06 Art Exhibit: Art Basel Miami Beach

Works by over 1500 artists from around the world will be displayed at one of the world’s premier art shows. Several art galleries from Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Buenos Aires will be highlighted at the four-day event located at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, Florida). info

12/09/06 Conference: Race and Immigration: Challenges and Opportunities for the New American Majority

According to the Institute for Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings’ website: “this public forum will explore the ways in which race is implicated in the current debate over immigration”. The conference is co-sponsored partly by entities at New York University and Harvard University.

12/15/06 Proposal Deadline: 5th Annual Maryland Graduate Student Forum

This conference- slated for February 23 and 25, 2007- has as its aim “to foster innovative, interdisciplinary scholarship and to disseminate that new knowledge to as wide an audience as possible”.

Proposals with a literary, historical, comparative, linguistic, language acquisition and interdisciplinary approach as well as from any time period are welcome. Please send a 150-word abstract in English by email attachment (Microsoft Word preferred) to the following address: mgsforum@gmail.com

12/15/06 Proposal Deadline: 13th Joseph Vélez Latin American Studies Conference

The theme of the conference- which will take place on February 9 and 10 at Baylor University- is “Race, Religion, and Democracy” Latin America in a Globalized World.” Papers on the conference topic can come from different backgrounds like literary, social, cultural, political, and artistic.

Proposals (200-word abstract) for single papers and complete sessions are welcome and may be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Please include your name, academic affiliation, contact information, and request for audiovisual support if needed.

12/23/06 Concert: New York Haitian Jazz Music Festival

Chardavoine, Jowee Omcil, and Mushi Widmaier are just a few of the musicians present during the second edition of the New York Haitian Jazz Music Festival which will be co-hosted by ex-Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean.
